A dangerous game with a witch
The play “The Konotop Witch” – is a bold modern interpretation of the satirical-realist story by Hryhorii Kvitka--Osnovianenko. This mystical phantasmagoria takes the audience to the small Ukrainian town of Konotop, where a new centurion, Mykyta Zabr'okha, has just been elected. He believes that his high status will help him conquer the heart of the beauty Olena, to whom he had already unsuccessfully proposed.
Just in case, Mykyta Zabr'okha decides to ask for help from the witch Yavdokha. But she is a stubborn creature, used to acting exclusively by her own rules. The witch's intervention triggers a chain of events that gradually leads the story to a completely different, grim finale. Was it worth it?

Ivan Uryvskyi and the Franko Theatre have created their own version of the Ukrainian classic. In this new interpretation, as in the original, many meanings are embedded – political, life-related, spiritual. For example, “The Konotop Witch” by Uryvskyi raises the theme of love and betrayal, the choice between Light and Darkness, power that accidentally falls into the wrong hands, renunciation of faith, etc. According to the director, “to some extent it is a kind of fairy tale with a terrible ending”.
The play harmoniously intertwines satire, Ukrainian folklore, and contemporary sounds, and each scene keeps the tension until the last moment. “The Konotop Witch” from the Franko Theatre – is an iconic modernized story about the terrible consequences of superstitions and human ambitions.
